The Swedish composer, Rolf Martinsson, born in 1956, remains little known. Today, with this new recording, the veil is lifted on a part of this orchestral music. In a copious program, we discover four scores that display in undeniable talent. “Open Mind” Op.71 from 2005 is a concert overture. It is followed by “Orchestral Songs Based on Poems by Emily Dickinson” Op.82a dating from 2009/2011 and made up of ten poems in three distinct parts, respectively “Songs of Love,” “Songs of Nature,” and “Songs of Life.” Next comes a work that pays tribute to Arnold Schoenberg, “A.S. In Memoriam” Op.50b from 1999/2001, which uses parts of his famous “Transfigured Night.” To close this classy musical trip, the “Concerto for Orchestra,” Op.81 dating from 2008, in three movements, cites himself, in which Rolf Martinsson quotes his most well-known works, just as in the past Richard Strauss did in his last tone poem, “A Hero’s Life.” This SACD is thus an essential discovery for those wishing to know more about contemporary Swedish music. The artists here present, the soprano Lisa Larsson, the conductor Andrew Manze and Sakari Oramo (just for the Concerto for Orchestra) defend these pages with brio and fervor. In short, this is an SACD that is simply not to be missed.
