Born in 1949, the Norwegian composer Lasse Thorensen studied acoustic music before he did concrete and spectral music in Paris. Since 1988 he teaches composing at the Norwegian Acadamy of Music. The recording here groups his chamber music works for flute and piano. The program includes six scores: “Sea of Names” Op.47 dating from 2012, “Stages of the Inner Dialogue” Op.9 from 1981, “With an Open Hand or a Clenched Fist” Op.6 from 1976, “Solspill” Op.13 from 1983 and revised in 1986, “Invocation of Crystal Waters” Op.52 dating from 2011, and to finish “Interplay” Op.11 from 1981/83. The music for flute and piano by Lasse Thoresen, majestically interpreted by Maiken Mathisen Schau and Trond Shau, possesses remarkably enchanting narrative power which, as a whole, plunges the listener into a sonic universe which is paradoxically dispossessed but of deep evocative wealth. The pieces for solo instrument alternate with the duos, and all are stamped with faultless coherence which allows the music to blossom fully. In a sound recording of ineffable beauty, this SACD will remain a great discovery for a long time to come.
