This new recording dedicated to the symphonic works of the contemporary Swedish composer Anders Hillborg is as fascinating as the one grouping one of his greatest works, “Eleven Gates” (see Opus HD Magazine N°87). The program revolves around four compositions as performed by three famous conductors. The opening, “Beast Sampler,” under the direction of Sakari Oramo, dating from 2014, is a score that explores the “organic” potential of the orchestra as seen as a moving and changing animal. The second, “O Dessa Ögon” for soprano and strings from 2011, that Sakari Oramo directs, is an evocation on solitude based on poems by the Swedish poet Gunnar Ekelöf. The third, “Cold Heat,” dating from 2010, with David Zinman conducting, is a work colored with elusive developments. The fourth, “Sirens’ from 2011, is the longest at more than thirty minutes, is a score for two sopranos, mixed chorus, and orchestra. The source of his inspiration is to be found in Homer’s Odyssey and the formidable figure of the sirens with their fatal song. It is placed under the orchestral direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen. This remarkably well-recorded SACD is proof that Anders Hillborg’s inspiration is plentiful. In this beginning of the 21st century, his music is, as ever, profound, inventive, and original. The pleasure of such a discovery, one of continuity in a musical language that is multiple yet whole, is to be preserved without moderation. This SACD is, quite simply, a must-get.
